Take Action: Contact Your MLA

Why It Matters:

It’s natural to feel like the government isn’t listening or that our efforts might be in vain. Sometimes, it can seem hopeless, and you might wonder if your voice truly makes a difference. But staying loud and continuing to speak out is more important than ever.

Documenting our opposition creates a record that keeps governments accountable. It shows that many people care deeply about protecting the rights of the trans community. These voices of resistance also give hope to future generations, demonstrating that standing up for justice is possible and necessary.

Moreover, preserving these records ensures that history accurately reflects the struggles and efforts of those who fought for equality. The more voices that come forward, the harder it becomes for governments or others to ignore or dismiss our concerns. Together, our collective strength can make a real difference.

Your voice matters, keep speaking out!

Add Your Own Person Experience

Dear [MLA Name],

I believe that every person deserves to live with dignity and respect,  regardless of their gender identity. The proposed legislation and use of  the Notwithstanding Clause threaten to take away important rights and  protections that many trans individuals rely on for their safety and  well-being.

Protecting Rights and Upholding Justice

Dear [MLA Name],

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to the Alberta government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to override the rights of trans people.

Trans rights are human rights. Every Albertan deserves safety, dignity, and equal protection under the Charter. The decision to bypass court review through the use of this clause not only undermines our constitutional protections but also sets a dangerous precedent for the rights of marginalized communities.

Gender-affirming care is supported by every major Canadian medical association. It is safe, evidence-based, and life-saving. Politicians should not overrule doctors or restrict medical care that families and health professionals support.

If you truly believe these laws are just, you should defend them in court instead of hiding behind the notwithstanding clause. Using this clause to silence judicial review and erase rights is an abuse of power and a betrayal of the principles of justice and equality.

I urge you to oppose this action, to call for the respect of the Charter, and to advocate for the protection of trans rights. Our community is watching, and history will remember who spoke up and who stayed silent.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

Personal Impact Focus

Dear [MLA Name],

As a member of our community and someone who cares deeply about the rights of all Albertans, I am compelled to share my concerns regarding the Alberta government’s use of the Notwithstanding Clause to override protections for trans people.

This legislation impacts real people, my friends, family members, and neighbours who deserve respect, dignity, and equal rights. The threat to gender-affirming care and trans rights is not just abstract; it affects the mental health, safety, and well-being of individuals I know personally.

I believe that everyone should have the freedom to live authentically without fear of discrimination or government interference. I urge you to reconsider the notwithstanding clause in this context and to stand up for justice and equality.

Please listen to the voices of your constituents and remember that our collective strength lies in unity and compassion. It’s time to prioritize human rights over political pandering.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Community and Future Generations Focus

Dear [MLA Name],

I am writing to you as a concerned member of our community, deeply worried about the Alberta government’s decision to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause to override the rights of trans people.

This action not only threatens the rights of current generations but also sets a troubling precedent for the future. It sends a message that discrimination can be justified through political power rather than compassion, evidence, and respect for human rights.

I have seen how access to gender-affirming care can transform lives, saving lives and fostering hope. My own experiences [or those of loved ones] have shown me how vital these protections are for mental health and dignity.

I ask you to stand up for what is right. Use your voice to oppose this legislation and to support policies that uphold the rights and dignity of all Albertans, especially those most vulnerable.

Let us show that our community values compassion, justice, and equality for all generations to come.

Thank you for listening to my concerns.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
